Pagan Blog Project - X is for Xhosa
The culture of the Xhosa people include what is considered one of the traditional African religions. They have male and female initiations and revere their ancestors. Diviners are called sangoma and serve as healers and prophets for the community. Sadly, Christianity has influenced modern Xhosa. The religious practices are now a combination of traditional beliefs and those from the Bible. Witchcraft is given a negative connotation; people who practice it are thought to be in contact with malevolent spirits and familiars.
